A Raja’s house – Fake chain mails

Ever since Mr. Andimuthu Raja (aka A. Raja) became famous thanks to his 2G spectrum scam, people have been circulating chain mails about a house which supposedly is of Mr. Raja. The house in question is this:

The Glass Pavilion by Steve Hermann
The Glass Pavilion by Steve Hermann

Now no matter how rich a person is, owning such a house in reality is an impractical thing. Who lives in a glass house for crying out loud? And had he been living in such a place wouldn’t that have raised eyebrows? But no, people like to believe in such mails, without using even a little bit of common sense. So I just did a little bit of Google to find out where this house actually is, and found it half way across the world from India, in California, United States of America. The house is known as “The Glass Pavilion” and belongs to California-based designer and developer Steve Hermann.

Visit the website of Mr. Steve Hermann and select projects in the bottom navigation. Then select Glass Pavilion to see the pictures.

So I hope the issue is settled once and for all as whether that house is actually of A. Raja.

Appreciating the woman in your life

This is a beautiful article, which I got as an email forward. Its really worth sharing, and expressing my consent over it:
The woman in your life…very well expressed

Tomorrow you may get a working woman, but you should marry her with these facts as well.

Here is a girl, who is as much educated as you are; Who is earning almost as much as you do;

One, who has dreams and aspirations just as you have because she is as human as you are;

One, who has never entered the kitchen in her life just like you or your Sister haven’t, as she was busy in studies and competing in a system that gives no special concession to girls for their culinary achievements

One, who has lived and loved her parents & brothers & sisters, almost as much as you do for 20-25 years of her life; One, who has bravely agreed to leave behind all that, her home, people who love her, to adopt your home, your family, your ways and even your family ,name

One, who is somehow expected to be a master-chef from day #1, while you sleep oblivious to her predicament in her new circumstances, environment and that kitchen

One, who is expected to make the tea, first thing in the morning and cook food at the end of the day, even if she is as tired as you are, maybe more, and yet never ever expected to complain; to be a servant, a cook, a mother, a wife, even if she doesn’t want to; and is learning just like you are as to what you want from her; and is clumsy and sloppy at times and knows that you won’t like it if she is too demanding, or if she learns faster than you;

One, who has her own set of friends, and that includes boys and even men at her workplace too, those, who she knows from school days and yet is willing to put all that on the back-burners to avoid your irrational jealousy, unnecessary competition and your inherent insecurities;

Yes, she can drink and dance just as well as you can, but won’t, simply Because you won’t like it, even though you say otherwise

One, who can be late from work once in a while when deadlines, just like yours, are to be met;

One, who is doing her level best and wants to make this most important, relationship in her entire life a grand success, if you just help her some and trust her;

One, who just wants one thing from you, as you are the only one she knows in your entire house – your unstinted support, your sensitivities and most importantly – your understanding, or love, if you may call it.

But not many guys understand this……

Please appreciate “HER”

Send this to all girls to make their day and to all guys who can handle it.

Searching for trains made easy

“eRail.in – Better Way To Search Trains” and really its as simple as ABC. Gone are those days when you had to visit Indian Rail website to check for trains and availability status, enter eRail.in and it redefines the way you search for trains. Gone is that tedious task of selecting the options spread in various pages, eRail gives you all the options in a single page, and u never leave the page. Everything is neatly provided in the same page.

After you open the website, the first thing you need to do is to select the source and destination stations, then you select the date of departure, which unlike the Railways website, provides a calendar view, which makes it easy to select your journey date. You then have the option to select the quota. Usually its general, unless you are looking for a tatkal reservation. Then you select the link in the middle of the header where it gives the names of the 2 stations, which u selected in the from and to station menus. After you click on the link, you get a list of the trains for the given route. Now here all the columns are sortable, so can sort the list of trains in whichever way you want, be it the train number, Departure and Arrival times, and even the journey length, suppose you were looking for a train with the least time taken to cover the journey, just sort it by the travel column and the train with the quickest journey comes on top. It also gives the information regarding which day(s) the train runs in a week. Then the list of the class of coach, which the train has, in order to check the availability status, you just click on that Av link, and the site queries the Railway website and gives you the result in the bottom half of the site. Another very useful thing about the site is that when you click on the train number, you get further information about the train, as the route, various fares for different classes, and even the train schedule. Then there is a map link, which shows the highlighted route over a map of India, which further gives you the idea of the train route. You can even check the status of your ticket by entering the PNR number in the “Get PNR Status” option. And also the running status of the train. Suppose you need to recieve someone at the station, but there are chances that the train may be late, you can use this service, it updates the train’s realtime status, although not exactly realtime, but still gives a fair idea of how late the train is running. So you don’t end up at the station waiting for an eternity for the train to arrive.

So this site is certainly useful, especially for those you regularly travel by train and need to check often about their favorite trains, thanks to eRail, train searching is really made simple.

Start planning for taxes now

January marks the start of a new year, but it also marks the last quarter of the financial year. Its that time of the year where you have to start planning for taxes. I have been getting some queries as to how can one save tax, so this post is an answer to that. Its always a good idea to start early and start investing, for retirement and tax saving. We’re more concerned about the later, so lets get on with the ways you can do so.

Home Loans
Your interest paid on home loans is eligible for tax deduction. So you can save upto Rs 1,50,000 per year this way.

Section 80D
Medical Insurance Premiums: This is a must have really. I suggest everyone should get a mediclaim aka the medical insurance. According to Section 80D, you get a rebate upto Rs. 15,000 on the premiums. So its really worth it.

Section 80C Deductions
These are pretty famous ones, and used the most to save tax upto Rs 1,00,000. The tax saving instruments under Section 80C are:
Provident Fund or Public Provident Fund: Provident Fund (PF) or Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a nice way to save tax, if you are salaried chances are your employer is already deducting some amount towards PF, it has a good rate of interest and the amount of money deducted from your salary, equal amount is also added by the employer towards your Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account. So the simple math is that if you pay say Rs 4,000 annually towards your PF account your employer also pays Rs 4,000 annually, so that gives you Rs 8,000 plus 8.5% interest, which is really good.
Life insurance premium: Another must have. Everyone should have a life insurance. And whatever amount you pay towards the premium, is tax deductible. So get a insurance policy with a premium which satisfies your tax saving requirements. You can use a tax calculator to get your taxable amount. These days its usually the Unit Linked Inusrance Policy (ULIP) which are most in use. They are far better than the traditional insurance policies because the amount of money you pay towards the inusrance premiums you are alloted some units, which has certain value and which differs from insurance company to insurance company. So your unit will give you the value it will have after some years down the line, which is an added bonus to your policy maturity value.

Other than the ones mentioned above there are some more ways to save tax, such as Equity Linked Saving Schemes (ELSS) namely the mutual funds, National Savings Certificates (NSC).

So plan however you want to save tax and start early. Mind you some of the options are linked to the share markets, so it might not yield instant money, but in the long run its definitely worth a shot. So if you have a risk appettite, go for the ELSS.

Congress advertises on Yahoo! India

Holy Smokes! Congress has an ad on Yahoo! India. Now since when these politicians started advertising on internet portals! See for yourselves if you don’t believe me.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

This is the first time I have seen any Indian Political Party advertising on the internet and asking for vote. The Indian National Congress (INC) has an ad on Yahoo! India where a Delhi Metro train passes by leaving a streak of the tricolour, and then leaving a message…”Because progress is visible here” and then comes the message, “Vote for Congress”. Now I expect the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders to take note of it and launch their own campaign. The United States presidential election campaign recently saw the huge amoung of money spent in the campaigning. Now I expect slowly these super rich Indian politicians to start spending huge on their campaigns in areas untouched, like the internet. The youth is ofcourse the main target here, and its a well thought of strategy to get votes from them. Lets see how successful it goes when the elections take place.
