2008 Movies Review

I’ve been trying to do this blog entry for sometime now, but never got much time, now that I have, I finally bring out this review of the 2008 year in movies. I had a “My Summer Movie Preview” thing way back in May 2008, where I covered a lot of blockbusters in the sort of 2008 Preview, 5 months late but then the biggest and much awaited movies hadn’t arrived. So it can be considered as a Preview. Anyways, its been a great year for movies. Lot of very good movies came out and I really loved most of them. So lets begin.

Bollywood: The first month of the year kicked off with Sunday. It had lots of funny moments, and was a good watch.
Hollywood: Cloverfield had some expectations and hype, and somewhat lived upto it. Wasn’t entirely satisfied though. Also saw Aliens Vs. Predator – Requiem. Although it was released in 2007, but I saw it in 2008. Then I saw Meet the Spartans, was fine, the usual parody from Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer.

Bollywood: Jodhaa Akbar was the only major Bollywood release in February, and I still havn’t seen it.
Hollywood: Nothing important from Hollywood either, so February went on as a dull month.

Bollywood: Race and One Two Three in Bollywood. Both were good.
One Two Three was hilarious.
Hollywood: 10,000 B.C. , havn’t seen it completely, the starting was so boring that couldn’t watch it any further. Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! was a nice movie. Nice animation and good voiceovers. Superhero Movie was another one of those spoof series. Wasn’t that good.

Bollywood: Krazzy 4, U Me Aur Hum and Tashan, I saw only Tashan, which really disappointed. I didn’t see
U Me Aur Hum, and I did start watching Krazzy 4, but didn’t see it complete, didn’t find it that interesting. Hollywood: Forgetting Sarah Marshall was a really good movie. Jason Segel was simply awesome in the Judd Apatow production. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay was a nice and a funny movie.

Bollywood: Jannat was a nice movie. Emraan Hashmi was good, and newcomer Sonal Chauhan also left an impression. Music was really good.
Hollywood: Iron Man was among the first blockbusters of the year. Awesome movie and was among the best of the year. Speed Racer was really a disappointment. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was also released this month, and I havn’t seen it yet. Then came Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which was a good movie.

Bollywood: Sarkar Raj and Mere Baap Pehle Aap were the only watchable films and both were good. Sarkar Raj although didn’t match its prequel but was good nonetheless. Mere Baap Pehle Aap was a routine Priyadarshan comedy and was worth a watch. Aamir was another one of the best movies of the year. Great acting by
Rajeev Khandelwal.
Hollywood: June was a very busy month. Lot of good movies came out. Kung Fu Panda was awesome. Lovely animation and superb voiceover made this a really good watch. I loved this movie. You Don’t Mess with the Zohan could have been better but some crude humour really let it down. Adam Sandler did a good job though. The Incredible Hulk was also a really good movie, and it gave a new life to the Hulk series. Really sets up the scene for the Avengers. Get Smart I wanted to watch, haven’t yet. The Love Guru was like Zohan let down by some crude and crappy humour. Made a mess of the movie. WALL-E got good response but I havn’t seen it yet. Wanted was a nice action packed summer action flick, worth a watch.

Bollywood: Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na was the only watchable movie and it was a really sweet movie. Imran Khan was really good and made a big mark in his first film.
Hollywood: Hancock was a decent film, nothing great but not a disaster either. Will Smith was fine. Then came the best of the year, The Dark Knight. It was really a superb movie, which was so good that I still can’t stop praising it. Heath Ledger was simply amazing. I had never seen anyone act like that, so menacing and so impressive. Best of the year surely.

Bollywood: This was a busy month. Ugly Aur Pagli was a funny movie, with some good acting by Ranvir Shorey. Singh Is Kinng was again a funny affair and although it was good, for me it didn’t justify the hype created around the movie. Bachna Ae Haseeno was an ok affair, didn’t satisfy much to the expectations, but still was a fine watch. Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam as a ok film, Paresh Rawal as really good. Rock On!! was probably the best of the month. Nice movie and a hatke storyline.
Hollywood: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was nowhere close to the previous Mummy films and Brendan Fraser was the only saving grace. I really though it would be a nice film but somehow the whole plot wasn’t that interesting. Pineapple Express was an awesome film, from the Judd Apatow production. Seth Rogen and James Franco were fantastic. Tropic Thunder I’m yet to see completely. I coudln’t finish watching it, not that the movie wasn’t interesting or anything, just that I didn’t get a chance. Vicky Cristina Barcelona was a good movie with strong performances from the cast. Scarlett Johansson looked great as always, Penélope Cruz was really good. Javier Bardem was and Rebecca Hall were quite good too. Disaster Movie was again the spoof series from Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer and was probably the worst from them. And justified to the name, a disaster.

A Wednesday was really a great movie. Never expected a movie like this. Definitely a must watch. Great acting by everyone in the movie.
Hollywood: Burn After Reading was one which was in the good reviews, but I havn’t seen it yet. Will give it a watch sometime.

Bollywood: This month had lots of movies, but Fashion was only worth the watch. Madhur Bhandarkar directed, realistic theme with lot of glamour. This was a good movie. Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Mugdha Godse, all the leading ladies impressed me.
Hollywood: Max Payne was one which I was looking forward to and still am, because I still haven’t seen it. Reviews weren’t good but I still want to see it, just because I’m a fan of the game. Zack and Miri Make a Porno was a Seth Rogen comedy, and I haven’t seen it yet, but will definitely want to.

Bollywood: Dostana was a good movie, really funny. Yuvvraaj was pathetic and a disaster. Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! was interesting and Abhay Deol impressed.
Hollywood: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa was ok. I loved the prequel much more though. Role Models I’m still waiting to see. Quantum of Solace was a good watch and again not as good as the prequel.

Bollywood: The last month had 2 blockbusters of the year, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Ghajini. Both were good movies. Rab Ne was really a sweet movie, I really liked it. Ghajini was good, but was heavily inspired from Memento.
Hollywood: Yes Man was a nice movie. Jim Carrey still rocks. And he is still good to watch. Lot of funny moments in the movie. Bedtime Stories, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Valkyrie and The Spirit were all released this month but I havn’t seen any of them. Waiting for there release and will definitely give them a watch.
